Benue Road Blockade Is a Warning of Deeper Political Divisions, I Believe

I saw the report about Peter Obi reacting to the blockage of an access road in Benue. I was not surprised. I have repeatedly argued that Nigeria needs a national referendum and a serious conversation about decentralising political and economic power. To me, the Benue incident is a warning of the political hostility and sabotage that may intensify ahead of the 2027 election. I do not believe lasting progress can come from elections that many Nigerians consider divisive, manipulated and disconnected from the country’s deeper structural problems. Rather than placing hope in familiar political promises, I believe Nigerians who want a better future should demand a national reset. This should include revisiting the 1999 Constitution and allowing an open referendum on regional autonomy, national unity and the country’s future structure. I believe Peter Obi and his supporters must also confront the systemic ethnic and political tensions that continue to shape Nigerian elections. In my view, maintaining the current system without meaningful reform will only deepen injustice and national division.
