South African Pastor and Wife Arrested After 200 People Found Chained at Illegal Rehab Centre
Police in Mpumalanga, South Africa, have arrested a pastor and his wife after raiding an unregistered church-run rehabilitation centre. About 200 children and adults receiving treatment for drug addiction were found living in overcrowded and unsafe conditions. Some residents were reportedly chained together, while others had untreated sores. Inspectors also found broken toilets, no running water and inadequate sleeping areas. The centre was reportedly licensed to accommodate 60 people but held more than 200, including at least 30 women. Fourteen residents were taken to hospital, while 132 others were returned to their families. The couple faces kidnapping charges as police investigate possible additional offences.
