Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, Omoyele Sowore and Adewole Adebayo have called for the release of Nnamdi Kanu and Hausa cultural-rights advocate Bichia Maisango. The former presidential candidates made the call after meeting in Port Harcourt, where they discussed Nigeria’s democracy, economy and security. They urged a review of cases involving people detained over political expression, self-determination advocacy or the peaceful exercise of constitutional rights. They said their demand should not be seen as an endorsement of the views or methods of Kanu and Maisango. The candidates also called for an end to what they described as the legal and political persecution of Sowore over his activism.

It is notable that the meeting linked calls for Nnamdi Kanu and Bichia Maisango's release with a broader conversation about Nigeria's democracy.

A public call is welcome, but it should not be treated as a solution by itself; the underlying legal and democratic issues still need attention.

The discussion should stay focused on clear reasons for release, due process, and what steps institutions are expected to take next.
