Fear in Ebonyi Community After Two Youths Are Allegedly Shot Dead at Mining Site
Residents of Ihetutu in Ishiagu, Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State are demanding an investigation after two young men were allegedly shot dead by soldiers deployed at a mining site. The victims were identified as 18-year-old Chibuike Elema and 19-year-old Obinna Joshua, a second-year undergraduate. Community members alleged that the youths were returning from work on Sunday when soldiers attached to the mining operation demanded money from them and opened fire after they said they had none. Families and community leaders have condemned the deaths and called on the Ebonyi State Government and security authorities to establish the facts, hold anyone found responsible accountable and prevent further violence. The mining company and the military authorities had not responded to the allegations in the report.
