Ilhan Omar: Biography, Political Career, Personal Life and Reported Assets
Ilhan Omar is a Somali-American politician who has represented Minnesota’s 5th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives since 2019. She previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives and became the first Somali-American elected to the US Congress. Born in Mogadishu in 1982, Omar fled Somalia’s civil war with her family and spent several years in a refugee camp in Kenya before resettling in the United States. She later studied political science and international studies before working in community and public-policy roles in Minneapolis. A progressive Democrat, Omar has supported policies including a higher minimum wage, universal healthcare, student-debt relief and immigrant protections. She has also drawn national attention for her criticism of Israeli government policies and was removed from the House Foreign Affairs Committee in 2023. Her reported household assets have been linked largely to businesses owned by her husband, Tim Mynett. Public estimates have varied widely, so any net-worth figure should be treated cautiously.
