Bandits Still Hold Niger State Doctor 33 Days After N20m Ransom Paid
The medical doctor abducted in Borgu Local Government Area remains in captivity 33 days after suspected bandits collected a N20 million ransom. Dr Tony Eghagagara, head of medical services at New Bussa General Hospital, was kidnapped on April 22, 2026, from his private clinic near Wawa town. Family sources say the kidnappers stopped all communication after receiving the payment. A reliable insider also disclosed that Dr Eghagagara is being forced to treat injured members of the armed group. In an emergency meeting, the National Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners called on the Niger State Government and security agencies to intensify efforts for his release. The association urged improved protection for health workers and stronger security around rural clinics.
