SportyBet and 114 Customers Remain Locked in ₦960m Winnings Dispute
A dispute between SportyBet and 114 customers over alleged unpaid winnings of about ₦960.55 million remains unresolved more than two years after the affected accounts were restricted. The customers deny SportyBet’s claim that they used automated betting software to manipulate its platform. They say the money came from legitimate winnings and that their accounts remained restricted even after they submitted identification and banking documents requested by the company. The customers have petitioned agencies including the EFCC, FCCPC and lottery regulator. SportyBet has maintained that the restrictions followed suspected fraudulent activity. Although a Lagos High Court case brought by the company was dismissed in November 2024, the central question of whether the disputed winnings should be paid has not been determined. The case has raised wider concerns about customer protection, transparency and dispute resolution in Nigeria’s rapidly growing online betting industry.
