Osun Residents Loot Food Warehouse After Operators of Cheap-Food Scheme Disappear
Residents of Osogbo, Osun State, reportedly looted food items from a warehouse operated by the Global Food Initiative after the operators of its cheap-food scheme allegedly disappeared. Customers said they had paid for rice, noodles and cooking oil at prices far below market rates but were unable to collect their items. One customer said she paid ₦300,000 for 11 bags of rice, while another said she paid ₦1.2 million for food supplies intended for her stepdaughter’s wedding. The crowd returned to the Odi-Olowo office on Tuesday after waiting for the operators to address the complaints. Some people reportedly forced their way into the warehouse and removed food items despite rainfall and attempts by police officers to restore order. Security operatives reportedly used tear gas as tension continued.
