Ondo Fishermen Lose Income After NAF Aircraft Crash Restricts Waterways
Fishermen, fish traders and boat operators in Igbokoda, Ondo State, say they have lost income since a Nigerian Air Force aircraft crashed into nearby waters on October 5. The Ilaje Fishermen Association said about 1,500 members have been affected by restrictions on movement and fears of water contamination. Some fishermen now travel farther to fish at higher costs, while traders report reduced fish supplies and boat operators have sought other work. Residents and the community’s monarch are calling for water and air-quality tests, environmental cleanup and compensation where losses are established. Ondo State officials say they will assess the site, while experts have urged scientific testing of water, sediments and fish before the waterways are declared safe.
