25 Killed as Rival Communities Clash Over Water in Chad
At least 25 people were killed and 22 others injured after rival communities clashed over access to a pond in central Chad. The violence began on October 30 near the border of Hadjer-Lamis and Bahr El-Ghazal provinces. A disagreement between a Kreda herder watering cattle and a member of the Kuka community reportedly escalated into gunfire. Authorities said 39 suspects have been arrested and taken to N'Djamena. Security forces have largely restored calm, while government officials visited the area to prevent further violence. Disputes over water, land and livestock are a recurring source of intercommunal violence in Chad, where access to safe water remains severely limited.
