Lade Bonuola at 80: Celebrating the Editor Who Raised Nigerian Journalism’s Standards

Veteran journalist and former Guardian editor Lade Bonuola, widely known as Ladbone, was celebrated at 80 in Lagos for more than five decades of shaping newsroom standards, mentoring journalists and demanding accuracy in every report. At the event, colleagues including Olusegun Osoba and Femi Kusa recalled an exacting editor whose red pencil was feared but respected. They credited his insistence on clear writing, context, grammar and factual precision with helping to set a benchmark for Nigerian newspapers. The celebration also featured the launch of “Ladbone: A Life in Print,” a collection of essays on his life and career. It coincided with a journalism archive initiative aimed at preserving the records and experiences of media professionals for future generations. Speakers said Bonuola’s legacy remains relevant in the digital era, where speed must still be balanced with fairness, accuracy, editorial independence and public trust.
