Tinubu’s 2027 Challenge: Can Economic Reforms Win Voter Support?
President Bola Tinubu’s expected 2027 re-election bid is likely to centre on whether Nigerians believe his economic reforms have improved their lives. The APC will have to defend its record after years of rising living costs, currency pressure, unemployment concerns and insecurity. Tinubu’s administration removed the petrol subsidy and reformed the foreign-exchange system, arguing that the measures were necessary to stabilise the economy and lay a foundation for growth. While investors and international lenders have welcomed parts of the reforms, many households continue to face high food, transport and energy costs. Opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, are expected to make hardship and security central issues. The APC’s nationwide political structure gives it a major advantage, but voters may ultimately judge the party by everyday realities such as jobs, affordability, electricity, safety and access to essential services. The key question ahead of 2027 is whether Tinubu can persuade voters that the pain of reform will lead to lasting economic gains, or whether the opposition can present a more convincing alternative.
