Arab Joint List Backs Eisenkot, but Netanyahu’s Return Remains Possible
Israel’s Arab-led Joint List alliance has recommended opposition politician Gadi Eisenkot to form the next government, following an inconclusive general election. The move increases pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but does not guarantee that Eisenkot can assemble a governing coalition. The alliance’s 11 lawmakers joined eight members of Ra’am in backing Eisenkot. Together, the two Arab-led groups hold 19 seats. The report says 67 lawmakers recommended him, while Netanyahu’s bloc fell short of the 61 seats needed for a majority. The parties backing Eisenkot have not all agreed to join his government, and both he and Netanyahu have faced complications over cooperation with Arab-led parties. President Isaac Herzog said he planned to appoint a candidate to try to form a government after further consultations. The post’s accompanying comment argues that Netanyahu should leave office and makes a serious accusation against him.
