First Lady Launches South-South Food Bank Programme, Announces N25m Each for Calabar Mall Fire Victims

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has launched the National Community Food Bank Programme for the South-South in Calabar. The initiative is designed to support vulnerable households, especially children under six, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers, with nutritious food. Three food banks have been established across Cross River’s three senatorial districts. The programme is expected to expand nationwide by 2027, with Anambra set to host the next zonal launch. She also announced N25 million in support for each of the 18 business owners affected by the Calabar Mall fire. During the visit, an ICT Experience Centre was inaugurated at the University of Cross River to support digital skills development for young people. Health Minister Ali Pate said the food bank model could help address malnutrition and stunting if replicated through primary healthcare facilities across the South-South.
