Nigerian Fugitive Arrested at Boston Airport After Seven Years Over Alleged Fraud Scheme
A 34-year-old Nigerian, Adetunji Abudu, has been arrested in the United States after seven years as a fugitive over allegations of money laundering linked to fraud schemes targeting elderly Americans. U.S. authorities said Abudu was arrested at Logan Airport in Boston after arriving from Istanbul, Turkey. He had allegedly left the United States for Nigeria in 2019 after the FBI searched his residence in North Providence, Rhode Island. Prosecutors allege that Abudu was among six defendants accused of laundering millions of dollars from online romance scams, fake sweepstakes, false rental listings and fraudulent shipping transactions. The funds were allegedly moved through bank accounts and businesses before significant proceeds were sent to Nigeria. Abudu has appeared in a U.S. District Court in Rhode Island and was ordered detained pending trial. Five co-defendants previously pleaded guilty and received sentences ranging from time served to 42 months in prison.
