Why Nigerians Must Demand Accountability for Abandoned Public Projects

Governments at federal, state and local levels announce projects worth billions of naira each year. Yet many communities say promised roads, schools, water schemes and health centres are never completed or never begin. Abandoned projects leave residents bearing the cost. Bad roads disrupt businesses and transport, unfinished schools affect learning, and unopened health facilities limit access to care. Funding gaps, inflation, contractor disputes and changes in government can delay projects. But weak oversight and poor transparency can also make it difficult for citizens to know how public funds were used. Citizens can track budgets, procurement records and project-monitoring platforms, while reporting abandoned sites to relevant authorities. Public performance should be measured by projects people can use, not only by projects that are announced.
