One Year On: Yelwata Massacre’s Unhealed Wounds Still Haunt Survivors
On the night of June 13–14, 2025, suspected armed herdsmen swept through Yelwata on the Makurdi-Abuja highway. Homes, market stores and shelters were set ablaze. Hundreds of men, women and children were killed or trapped in the flames. Twelve months later, charred walls and roofless houses still scar the town. Displaced families live in makeshift shelters. Official figures cite 59 deaths, but residents and independent observers insist the toll exceeds 300. Some humanitarian groups and individuals stepped in to rebuild. A Christian missionary mobilised resources to restore a handful of homes. Yet broader reconstruction stalled amid bureaucratic delays and funding gaps. For many in Yelwata, remembrance ceremonies are only symbolic. Survivors demand justice, security and full restoration of their community. They still await answers about who planned the attack and why warnings went unheeded.
