Delta’s 13th-Month Salary Law Should Not Replace Serious Legislative Work
Delta State’s decision to guarantee a 13th-month salary for civil servants will offer welcome relief to workers. However, treating the policy as an exceptional favour from government risks turning a basic labour benefit into political theatre. Thirteenth-month pay and end-of-year bonuses are common employment practices in many countries. They are often designed to cushion workers against inflation and high seasonal expenses. A state government can provide such support through clear policy and proper budget planning. The bigger concern is whether lawmakers are giving enough attention to Delta’s wider challenges. Roads, schools, healthcare, investment, revenue and budget oversight require independent and sustained legislative action. Paying workers what they are due is a responsibility of government, not a reason for excessive praise.
