Lagos Says It Has Cleared Pension Backlog After Paying ₦92bn to 25,000 Retirees
The Lagos State Government says it has paid ₦92 billion in accrued pension rights to more than 25,000 retirees since May 2019. The Lagos State Pension Commission said a ₦5 billion payment to 1,963 retirees in July 2024 cleared the outstanding backlog under the Contributory Pension Scheme. Accrued rights cover the gratuity and pension benefits owed to retiring public servants. LASPEC said Lagos has paid a total of ₦168.2 billion to over 48,000 retirees since 2007. It added that more than ₦4 billion has been paid to 1,862 retirees in 2026, while a further ₦1 billion is expected to reach about 700 retirees soon. The commission also said the state raised pension contribution rates in 2020 to 10% for employers and 8% for employees, while introducing faster gratuity payments for critically ill pensioners.
