Delta Police Arrest Three Over Alleged ₦5.48m Government Appointment Scam
Delta State Police Command says it has arrested three suspected members of a fraud syndicate accused of impersonating senior government officials to obtain money from victims. Police said the suspects allegedly deceived a community leader in Otu-Jeremi into paying ₦5.475 million for a promised appointment as President-General of the community. The group reportedly offered employment, political appointments and other government privileges to targets. Investigators said the suspects used SIM cards and caller-identification apps to make calls appear to come from public officials. Police recovered mobile phones, SIM cards, ATM cards, a POS terminal and documents containing financial and identity details during a search. The command urged residents not to rely on caller-identification apps as proof of a caller's identity, especially when money or government appointments are involved. Investigation is ongoing to identify other victims and accomplices.
