Iranian Cybercrime Suspect Extradited to US Over Alleged $3.4bn Data Theft Scheme
An Iranian-Turkish national, Amir Barati, has been extradited from Montenegro to the United States to face wire-fraud and computer-fraud charges. US prosecutors allege that Barati was part of a years-long hacking operation that targeted universities, technology firms, defence contractors and public institutions. The group allegedly breached about 8,000 academic email accounts and sought valuable research data and intellectual property. Barati is accused of helping to monitor attacks on universities and compile target lists for private-sector organisations. Prosecutors say some of the alleged intrusions were carried out on behalf of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The claims remain allegations, and Barati is expected to answer the charges in a US court.
