Tinubu’s 2012 Subsidy Warning and Nigeria’s Present Hardship

President Bola Tinubu strongly opposed subsidy removal under President Goodluck Jonathan in 2012. He warned that higher fuel prices would raise transport fares, food costs and the cost of doing business, while ordinary Nigerians carried the burden. Today, Tinubu’s government has removed the petrol subsidy, and many of the same consequences are being felt by households, workers, students and small businesses. Higher pump prices ripple through the economy, reducing purchasing power and worsening the cost-of-living crisis. The issue is not whether subsidy should last forever. It is whether government put reliable mass transit, energy infrastructure, anti-corruption measures and adequate protections in place before asking citizens to bear the full cost. Nigerians are entitled to judge Tinubu the president by the same standard Tinubu the critic applied in 2012.
