2027: Atiku Backs Opposition Coalition Talks, Sets Conditions for Joint Candidate

Uncertainty surrounds calls for Nigeria’s opposition parties to adopt a single presidential candidate for the 2027 election. The Group of 100 Nigerians, led by former APC chieftain Salisu Lukman, has proposed an August 18 opposition summit in Abuja. The group wants major opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, to explore a broad coalition against President Bola Tinubu. Atiku’s aide, Phrank Shaibu, said the former vice-president supports efforts to build a credible opposition but has not confirmed whether he will attend the summit. He said any process for selecting a joint candidate must be transparent, inclusive and democratic. With consultations ongoing, the summit may reveal whether opposition leaders can resolve competing interests and agree on a common candidate for 2027.
