Why Makinde’s UN Appeal over Oyo Kidnapping Misses the Mark
Governor Seyi Makinde’s request for the United Nations to probe the Oyo school abduction risks turning a national tragedy into political theatre. The May 15 kidnapping of pupils and teachers in Oriire was horrific. Security forces rescued them after 56 days, but Makinde’s focus shifted from gratitude and healing to internationalising the crisis. Nigeria has its own institutions—police, military intelligence, courts, human-rights bodies and parliamentary committees—that can handle any evidence of collusion or negligence. If Makinde suspects foul play, he should present proof to domestic agencies, not seek headlines abroad. Linking the abduction to his presidential launch only deepens the offence. Families deserve compassion and answers, not campaign slogans. The state’s sovereignty and children’s trauma must not become props in a bid for power.
