U.S. Committee Rebukes Ramaphosa Over Condolences for Iran’s Khamenei
Iran’s embassy in South Africa announced it had received a letter of condolence from President Cyril Ramaphosa after Iranian officials claimed the “martyrdom” of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on Feb. 28. Iran and South Africa have long-standing diplomatic ties. The U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs quickly reposted the embassy’s message on X, accusing Ramaphosa of cozying up to the Iranian regime while enjoying American hospitality in Chicago. “No friend of the Ayatollah is a friend of ours,” the committee wrote. After leaving the United States, Ramaphosa traveled to Brazil for a state visit at President Lula’s invitation. South Africa often takes independent foreign policy positions, especially on Middle East issues, which sometimes diverge from Washington’s stance.
