AKK Pipeline: Why Are NNPC, the Gas Minister and Regulator Giving Different Completion Figures?
Nigeria needs a clear and verifiable update on the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano Pipeline project. NNPC says the 623-kilometre mainline and River Niger crossing have been completed, while the Minister of State for Gas puts overall completion at about 95% and expects delivery in 2027. However, the petroleum regulator’s August 2026 assessment reportedly placed the project at 88% completion, with some reports citing 80%. These figures may cover different parts of the project, but the agencies involved have not published a single breakdown explaining what has been completed and what remains. The pipeline was inaugurated in 2020 with an initial 2022 completion target. Nigerians deserve an audited timetable showing the status of the pipeline, gas stations, connections, commissioning work and the expected date for commercial gas supply to Abuja and other intended markets. The key question is simple: if the mainline is complete, what work remains before gas can flow, and which institution will provide one authoritative project status report?
