Petrol at ₦1,430 a Litre Is Burning Through Nigerian Incomes
Between 10 and 22 September, I spent ₦211,396 on petrol for one car. That is about ₦17,616 daily, or more than ₦528,000 in a month if the pattern continues. This is not luxury spending. It is the cost of getting to work and returning home. At petrol prices of about ₦1,385 to ₦1,430 per litre, transport costs are squeezing workers, pensioners, families and small businesses. Food, electricity, healthcare and rent still have to be paid. If commuting consumes most of a person's income, what is left to live on? Other countries have used targeted fuel relief, tax cuts and support for low-income commuters to cushion price shocks. Nigeria needs a clear and practical response that eases the burden on households, not only promises of future relief. Nigerians should demand a credible road out of worsening hardship.
