North Korea Tests Suspected Hypersonic Missile as Kim Warns of “Incurable Headache”
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw a new missile test, saying the country’s weapons progress would give its adversaries an “incurable headache.” He described the development as a major boost to North Korea’s combat readiness. South Korea said two short-range ballistic missiles were launched from the Wonsan area, about three hours apart. They travelled between 450km and 600km towards the East Sea, while Japan said both landed outside its exclusive economic zone. North Korea did not identify the weapon used. However, analysts believe it may have been an upgraded missile fitted with hypersonic glide technology, which can manoeuvre in flight and make interception more difficult. The launch comes amid renewed tensions over joint military exercises involving the United States, South Korea and Japan. Kim was pictured at the test site with his daughter, Kim Ju Ae.
