International Day of the Girl Child: End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls’ Rights
On International Day of the Girl Child, I stand with every girl whose education, safety and future are threatened by poverty, discrimination or early marriage. Girls deserve the freedom to learn, grow, develop their talents and make choices about their own lives. Child marriage is not a solution to poverty or insecurity. Every girl deserves protection, quality education and equal opportunities. When girls are supported, families, communities and the nation benefit. I call on parents, community and religious leaders, policymakers, schools and civil society groups to protect girls’ childhoods and defend their rights. Let us build communities where no girl is forced to abandon her dreams for marriage or denied an education because of her gender.
