Nigerian Ports Handle 12.3% More Cargo in Q2 2026 as Vessel Traffic Rises

Nigeria’s ports handled 35.74 million metric tonnes of cargo in the second quarter of 2026, a 12.3% increase from 31.83 million tonnes in the same period of 2025, according to the Nigerian Ports Authority’s operational report. Vessel traffic rose by 14.4% to 1,201 ocean-going ships, while container traffic increased by 11.3% to 602,392 TEUs. Vehicle imports also grew by 18.3% to 44,147 units. Outward cargo rose by 22%, indicating stronger export activity, although outward laden container traffic fell slightly by 3.9%. The NPA said rising transshipment volumes could position Nigerian ports as a regional hub. It plans to modernise Apapa and Tin Can Island ports, support deep-sea port projects, revive eastern ports, and expand digital systems to cut delays and logistics costs.
