Salif Keita Cancels South African Shows, Citing Xenophobic Violence
Malian music icon Salif Keita has cancelled his planned South African concerts, including his 12 September 2026 appearance at the Macufe festival in Bloemfontein, over renewed xenophobic violence against African migrants. In an open letter, Keita said his decision was not a rejection of South Africans. He said economic hardship must not be used to justify violence against fellow Africans and called for an Africa where people can live without fear. The singer said he remains open to performing in non-commercial settings, including townships, where music can encourage dialogue, healing and ubuntu. His decision has renewed debate about the impact of anti-migrant violence on South Africa's relationship with the rest of the continent.
