Manufacturers Count Losses as Sachet Alcohol Ban Forces Production Overhaul

Nigeria’s alcohol manufacturers are adjusting to the renewed enforcement of the ban on sachet drinks and PET bottles below 200ml. While sealed factories have reopened and a detained manager has been released, workers say the policy has already disrupted production and investment. The Food, Beverage and Tobacco Senior Staff Association says manufacturers must now redesign production lines and fund alternative packaging. The affected sachets were popular because they were affordable for many low-income consumers, raising concerns that larger pack sizes may attract weaker demand. Labour leaders also fear the long-term effect on jobs if companies cannot manage the transition. The union says it was excluded from key negotiations and expects to engage employers as they assess restructuring plans and possible employment implications.
