US-Led Coalition Ends Military Mission in Iraq After 12 Years

The US-led international coalition has ended its military mission in Iraq, more than a decade after it was deployed to help fight the Islamic State group. The coalition began operations in Iraq and Syria in 2014 after Islamic State captured large territories and carried out widespread atrocities. Although the group lost its territorial control in Iraq in 2017, coalition forces remained to support Iraqi operations against militant remnants. Iraq and the United States agreed to a phased withdrawal in 2024. Iraqi leaders have described the departure as a step towards greater national sovereignty, while debates continue over armed groups operating outside state control. Security concerns remain in the Kurdistan region, particularly over protection from drone attacks. Iraqi security forces will now take greater responsibility for tackling Islamic State and other militant threats.
