Rita Edochie: A Man Cannot Take Another Statutory Wife Before Divorce

Actress Rita Edochie has said a man in a subsisting statutory marriage cannot simply take another wife under the same law until the first marriage has been legally dissolved. She stressed that living apart, family acceptance, promises or a lavish wedding ceremony do not replace a divorce decree. Her comments come amid her public dispute involving her nephew-in-law, actor Yul Edochie, and Judy Austin. She also noted that inheritance issues are not automatic. They can depend on a will, ownership of property, children and the applicable law.
