Shettima Urges States to Build Their Own Electricity Markets
Vice President Kashim Shettima has urged state governments to use the Electricity Act 2023 to develop intrastate electricity markets and reduce dependence on the Federal Government. He said reliable power for homes, businesses and public facilities is essential to Nigeria’s industrial growth. States were encouraged to develop energy sources that suit their regions, including solar in the North, gas in the Niger Delta and hydropower in areas with strong water resources. Shettima also called on states to establish capable electricity regulatory agencies. He said clear licensing rules, consumer protection and private-sector investment will be needed to improve supply. Do state governments have the capacity to run effective electricity markets and deliver more stable power?
