Woman Seeks Abuja Court Order to Stop Police Arrests, Passport Seizure Over Marriage Dispute

Doris Ojuederie has asked the FCT High Court in Abuja to stop the Nigeria Police Force from arresting, detaining or allegedly harassing her over a dispute linked to her planned marriage. Ojuederie and her fiancé, Ezenwaogene, filed a fundamental rights suit against the Inspector-General of Police, the FCT Commissioner of Police, the Police Service Commission, officers of the National Cybercrime Centre and others. A woman accused of instigating the police action was also joined in the suit. Ojuederie alleged that she was arrested on August 6, 2026, and that her phones were seized for forensic examination. She further claimed that officers threatened to seize her passport, restrict her travel and arrest her again. The applicants said the matter was civil and relationship-related, while acknowledging that police may investigate any genuine criminal offence through due process. The court directed the applicants to notify the respondents and adjourned the case until September 8, 2026, for hearing.
