INEC Warns Politicians Against Violence, Vote-Buying Ahead of 2027 Elections
INEC has warned political parties, candidates and campaign managers that violence, hate speech, intimidation and vote-buying will attract sanctions and possible prosecution ahead of the 2027 general election. The commission said its election-security committee has activated an early-warning system to track political violence, thuggery and dangerous campaign rhetoric. INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan said no political ambition should cost the life of any Nigerian. Amupitan said he had received reports of an alleged armed campaign appearance by a candidate in Kano State and threats against INEC personnel. He added that the commission may provide bulletproof vehicles for staff deployed to security flashpoints. INEC also said more than 10.6 million people registered during three phases of continuous voter registration. The commission has acquired 57,000 additional BVAS devices and plans to strengthen digital authentication and transmission of polling-unit results.
