Ninki Nanka: A West African River Legend, Part 1
A friend shared this chilling West African legend with me, and I have not stopped thinking about it. An old native doctor is awakened by a vast shadow serpent that has overpowered his guardian spirit. The creature demands release from a spell cast long ago and gives him seven days to act. Elsewhere, a hungry fisherman ignores warnings about a forbidden bend in the river. After seeing a huge serpent-like figure rise from the water, he dies days later under mysterious circumstances. Village elders identify the being as Ninki Nanka, a feared river guardian in Gambian folklore. Have you heard stories of Ninki Nanka or similar river guardians in African tradition?
