Navy Tasks Graduating Senior Officers to Use Technology to Strengthen Maritime Security
The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Idi Abbas, has urged graduating senior officers of the Naval War College Nigeria to apply technology, strategic thinking and professionalism to protect Nigeria’s maritime space. Speaking at the graduation of Naval Warfare Course 10 in Calabar, Abbas said maritime security is closely tied to the economy because of offshore resources, ports, shipping routes and energy infrastructure. He said Nigeria had recorded no reported piracy incidents in its waters for four consecutive years, but called for sustained surveillance, regional cooperation and rapid responses to threats. He said the Navy would continue supporting operations against crude oil theft, illegal mining and other forms of economic sabotage. Abbas also urged officers to remain apolitical and act within the law if deployed for election-related security duties. The course included participants from Cameroon, Ghana and Liberia, with training in operational planning, maritime security, leadership, research and joint military operations.
