Ex-US Mayor Says Nigeria’s Breakup is ‘Inevitable and Just’
Mike Arnold, a former US mayor and head of Africa Arise International, told a US congressional audience that Nigeria’s federal design was a British colonial contraption destined to fail. He argued that only a freely chosen constitutional future via referendum can deliver justice. Arnold drew parallels with India-Pakistan, Sudan-South Sudan, and the dissolution of British Somaliland to make his case for separation. He highlighted that the old Eastern Region was one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies from 1955 to 1965 before the Biafran war and condemned the British-backed blockade that caused mass starvation. He also warned that violence against Christian communities has worsened since Nigeria was named a Country of Particular Concern. Arnold accused the current administration of denying recognition and aid to displaced Nigerians, arguing that this deliberate obstruction meets the legal threshold for genocide.
