IMF Chief Warns AI Could Shrink Entry-Level Jobs for Young Graduates
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva says artificial intelligence is beginning to disrupt the global labour market, with young graduates facing the greatest risk as routine entry-level roles decline. She warned that these jobs have traditionally provided the first step for workers to gain experience and progress in their careers. IMF estimates suggest that around 40 per cent of jobs worldwide could be augmented, downgraded or eliminated by AI over time. World Bank Jobs Council co-chair Tharman Shanmugaratnam called on governments and employers to provide lasting support for young job seekers, including incentives for businesses to hire graduates and stronger workplace training. He said AI-driven displacement is likely to happen task by task, giving schools, employers and policymakers time to respond.
