Six US Allies Back Efforts to Secure Oil Shipping Through the Strait of Hormuz

Six US Allies Back Efforts to Secure Oil Shipping Through the Strait of Hormuz

In a joint statement, UK, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Japan condemn Iran’s recent attacks on unarmed commercial vessels and civilian infrastructure in the Gulf. They urge Iran to stop threats, laying mines, and drone and missile attacks on the Strait. They call for full compliance with UN Security Council Resolution 2817 and stress that freedom of navigation is a core principle of international law. The statement warns that disruptions to the Strait of Hormuz threaten global energy security, especially for vulnerable populations. The allies express readiness to plan and support measures to ensure safe passage and to stabilise energy markets. They welcome the IEA’s coordinated release of strategic reserves and pledge further steps to boost production and assist affected nations via the UN and international financial institutions.
