Candidates for FIDE president outlined competing plans during their first election debate ahead of the September 26 vote in Samarkand. Timur Turlov and Jan Henric Buettner led most of the discussion after Wadim Rosenstein lost his internet connection shortly after his opening remarks. Turlov proposed a development fund of more than $6 million to help national chess federations organise tournaments, train arbiters and coaches, improve infrastructure and support players travelling for competitions. He also called for stronger anti-cheating systems, possible biometric identification for official online events, and more transparent financial reporting at FIDE. Buettner focused on attracting major sponsors, expanding FIDE's income streams and developing women's chess. His proposal includes distributing 20% of the federation's total revenue to national federations. The election features three teams, with each eligible national federation holding one vote.
