INEC Plans AI Checks for Results and Cybersecurity Ahead of 2027 Elections
INEC says it plans to use artificial intelligence to support result verification, detect irregularities and strengthen cybersecurity ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. The commission has created an AI Division within its ICT Department. It says automated auditing tools will scan result records for discrepancies before final validation, while AI-based monitoring systems will help detect suspicious activity on its databases and public platforms. INEC also says it is preparing for risks such as deepfake videos, cloned voices and fabricated election documents. The commission stressed that AI will remain subject to human auditing, legal checks and constitutional procedures. The plan is part of wider upgrades to BVAS, result-upload authentication, system testing and voter-accreditation preparations. Its success will depend on transparency, reliable testing and public confidence in the safeguards.
