INEC Warns Oyo Political Parties Against Hate Speech and Violent Campaigns

INEC has warned political parties and candidates in Oyo State against inflammatory campaign language that could provoke ethnic, religious or sectional tension. The commission said campaigns must focus on issues rather than personalities, religion or ethnicity. The Oyo Resident Electoral Commissioner said individuals found in breach of the Electoral Act could face fines of up to ₦5 million or 12 months’ imprisonment. Political parties could be fined up to ₦10 million for a first offence. INEC directed parties to submit the dates and venues of rallies and meetings for monitoring. It also urged candidates, supporters and security agencies to ensure that the forthcoming elections are peaceful, transparent and based on ideas rather than violence.
