Iran Officials Warn Starlink Could Undermine State Communication Controls
Iranian communications official Mohammad Hafez Hekmati has warned that wider Starlink access could weaken the government’s ability to monitor and control online communication. He said satellite direct-to-cell services could bypass Iran’s phone-registration system, making it harder for authorities to identify users. He also suggested that existing communication agencies could become ineffective if Starlink use spreads. Iran has previously blocked platforms and imposed internet shutdowns during periods of unrest. The report says officials are now considering whether electricity cuts could be used to restrict satellite-based connections that operate outside state-controlled networks.
