Why Tinubu Should Face Nigerians on the 2027 Campaign Trail
I find it difficult, as a Yoruba person raised to respect elders, to directly call President Bola Tinubu a liar. Yet I question his claim that he will limit campaign appearances in order to focus on governance and Nigeria’s financial obligations. I argue that the President should personally explain his administration’s record to voters. Campaign stops would give Nigerians an opportunity to ask about fuel subsidy reforms, public debt, insecurity, abandoned roads, refinery operations and the economic hardship many families face. I also believe the President should address public concerns about his capacity to handle another term. If health is a factor in his decision to avoid campaign rallies, I argue that he should consider whether seeking re-election is in the country’s best interest.
