IGP Warns Nigerians: Mob Justice and Torture of Suspects Are Crimes

IGP Warns Nigerians: Mob Justice and Torture of Suspects Are Crimes

Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has warned Nigerians against jungle justice, saying anyone who tortures or kills a suspect outside the law will be treated as a criminal and prosecuted. He stressed that suspects, including those caught in the act, must be handed over to the police or another authorised security agency for investigation. Guilt can only be determined by a competent court. The warning follows recurring cases of mob violence, including the fatal torture of a burglary suspect allegedly linked to a vigilante group in Obollo Etiti, Enugu State. The IGP noted that false accusations, mistaken identity and mob hysteria can lead to the deaths of innocent people. He urged community leaders, vigilante groups and youths to report crimes and allow due process to take its course, insisting that mob violence is a crime, not justice.
