Iranian Accounting Student Sentenced to Death Over Alleged Blasphemy Post
Iranian human rights activists say Najmeh Amini, a 23-year-old accounting student, has been sentenced to death on a blasphemy charge after spending eight months in Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad. Amini was arrested on January 31 during wider protests against Iran’s government. She had earlier faced accusations including insulting the Supreme Leader, acting against national security and spreading anti-government propaganda. She was also handed a prison sentence of 12 years, six months and one day on the other charges. In a voice recording reportedly made from prison, Amini appealed to lawyers, human rights groups and international bodies to review her case. She said she wanted justice and an opportunity to defend herself.
