Dredgers Urge Sanwo-Olu to Probe Alleged ₦500,000 Extortion of Tipper Operators
The Dredgers Association of Nigeria has asked Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to investigate allegations of harassment, intimidation and extortion involving sand dredgers and tipper-truck operators in the state. The association alleged that enforcement officers acting under Commissioner Ekundayo Alebiosu and a senior official identified as Cardozo impounded trucks and demanded up to ₦500,000 for their release. It also claimed that the officials invoked the governor’s name and were sometimes accompanied by armed police officers. DAN said the enforcement actions interfere with lawful sand-mining and dumping operations whose operators pay federal royalties. The group urged the state government, federal mining authorities and dredging operators to hold talks and clarify the limits of their regulatory powers.
